● What inspired you to pursue a career in facial skincare? Was there a particular moment or experience that ignited your passion?

As a teenager, I struggled with skin issues. I distinctly remember admiring the work and expertise of my beauty therapist during my visits. At that time, it all seemed so surreal to me. While I’ve always understood the importance of skincare, I also felt the significance of responsibility that comes with caring for someone else’s skin.

For me, the most pivotal moment in my career came with pregnancy. It was as if I had gained twice the strength and passion for my work. Pregnancy seemed to spark my wildest ideas, and my career took off at full speed. Having a child didn’t slow me down in any way, as it marked the peak of my professional journey.

When my son was around seventeen months old, I leapt and opened my own clinic, focusing primarily on skincare. It was then that I made the conscious decision to specialise in treating problematic skin.

● With 15 years of experience in the industry, you’ve seen trends come and go. What key changes have you observed in skin care practices over the years, and how have they influenced your approach to treating skin concerns?

In the last 15 years, there has been a significant evolution in skincare practices. When I first started, the approach to skin was aggressive like deep peels and microdermabrasion. However, in the last 5 years, aesthetic medicine has taken centre stage. Aesthetic medicine is still at the forefront, but I am glad clients now approach these procedures with greater awareness and understanding.

New technologies like LED therapy, lasers, and RF microneedling have greatly transformed skincare, giving quick results with minimal downtime, which is great. What excited me the most is the growing recognition of holistic skincare practices. Clients are increasingly aware of the interconnectedness between their lifestyle choices and skin health. So, I focus on understanding each client’s lifestyle to give personalised treatments that address the root causes of their skin issues for long-lasting results.

● As the owner of a beauty clinic, you’ve likely encountered a diverse range of clients with various skincare needs. Can you share with us some of the most common concerns or conditions clients seek your expertise for?

One of the most common problems my clients face is acne, which affects both teens and adults, especially women who want to feel good about their appearance. Having struggled with acne in my teens and dealing with skin issues due to thyroid problems now, I understand the emotional toll it can take. That’s why my goal is to help every woman feel confident in her skin. So far, I’ve been successful in helping numerous women regain their confidence through personalised therapy treatments.

Over the years, I’ve delved deeper into this issue to better assist my clients. I’ve developed a holistic approach to skincare as I believe real skincare involves more than just surface treatments; it’s about understanding the body as a whole. Our skin reflects our overall health and lifestyle choices, so by addressing these factors, we can achieve long-lasting results.

● Could you walk us through some of the most effective techniques or treatments you use to address these issues?

For years, I’ve approached acne treatment holistically, finding it to be the most effective method. I focus on educating my clients about skincare and promoting a healthy lifestyle to address the root causes of acne. In battling acne, I often incorporate gentle chemical peels. It’s also crucial to rebalance the skin’s microbiome when treating acne.

Moreover, I have started working with ScarINK techniques(micropuncture) in my recent efforts to tackle scarring. This cutting-edge technique enables me to address various types of scars beyond those limited to the face.

● What are some of the misconceptions you’ve encountered in your practice, and how do you debunk them for your clients?

In the past, chemical peels were seen as discomfort and aggression towards the skin, causing a lot of skin peeling. This misconception scared people away from professional skin care treatments. But, skincare has come a long way.

Today, we have advanced procedures with minimal side effects. Modern chemical peels are an adequate example. They’re carefully formulated to give exceptional results without the harsh aftermath of older methods.

● In addition to treating specific skin concerns, you also serve as a trainer for aspiring skincare specialists. What motivated you to take on this role?

When I started working as a beauty therapist, there weren’t many training academies beyond those providing national beauty qualifications. Along the way, I made plenty of mistakes before I felt well skilled in skincare. Today, I’m keen to help aspiring professionals navigate challenging cases and gain experience. I believe that by learning from my mistakes, they’ll be able to achieve what took me years to achieve much more quickly.

● Balancing professional expertise with a personal touch can be challenging in the beauty industry. How do you develop a welcoming environment for your clients?

I ensure every client feels special right from the moment they walk in. Firstly, a calm and relaxing music welcomes each client, and offering coffee or tea upon arrival helps them feel more comfortable. Consultation is another ideal opportunity to establish trust through meaningful conversation before moving on with the treatment. Beyond appointments, I constantly stay connected with my clients, offering follow-ups and ongoing support.

● What advice do you impart to your students as they embark on their careers in the industry?

First and foremost, I encourage my students to prioritise education. Education is an investment in which we never lose anything. The beauty industry is evolving rapidly, and staying updated with the latest trends is crucial. Lastly, Instead of comparing yourself to others, always remember your uniqueness. Focus on yourself, your passions, and the needs of your clients.
