Can you share the story behind your clinic Studio 12 Aesthetics, and what inspired you to start your own business in the beauty industry?

Since I was young, I’ve always loved everything about skincare and beauty. In secondary school, I did work experience at a skin and beauty clinic, and that’s when I realised this was the career for me. After finishing school, I attended a well-known beauty college but focused mostly on skincare. My career flourished – I took various courses, managed top establishments, and taught students. Although rewarding, I felt a desire for something more.

The turning point came after a very difficult time whilst having my second son, which made me reflect on life. Thankfully, I’m lucky to still be here but it made me reevaluate my goals. Once I made a full recovery, that’s when I decided to enter the field of aesthetics.

After qualifying in aesthetics a few years ago, I always knew I wanted my own place. However, it took time as I had invested a lot in courses. I’d often browse online for places and visualise how my clinic would look. Finally, the perfect unit came up on the high street in St Albans, and I had a good feeling about it. I believe timing is crucial, and when things feel right, you should go for it and not look back.

With the support of my very talented dad and husband, I turned my dream into reality. I’m grateful to them for helping set up my space, and I take pride in my clinic. Skincare and aesthetics are my passion, and after 20 years in the industry, I can’t imagine doing anything else.

What sparked your interest in aesthetics, and how did you develop a passion for helping clients enhance their natural beauty?

My interest actually came from both my mum and my aunty. I grew up watching them take care of their skin, lots of different products that I wanted to get my little hands on. They loved makeup and it was always done to perfection, you could see it made them feel good and as a young child I looked up to them and I thought they were so glamorous.

So when the moment came that I could get a job, it had to be in beauty, my school friends who I’m still close with were my models and I pursued my passion and went to beauty college.

Precisely, my goal was always to practise aesthetics and have my own clinic. I’m passionate about skin treatments and injectables, I love creating natural results and helping to combat difficult skin conditions but more than that, I love making people feel good about themselves, finding a confidence they never knew they had. That’s what keeps me going.

Studio 12 Aesthetics is known for its unique approach. Can you elaborate on the philosophy or principles of your services and set it apart from others?

In our growing beauty business, Studio 12 Aesthetics and Skin Clinic is committed to giving our clients the highest standard of care in a relaxed, welcoming environment. We always aim to do our best in every treatment, using the latest techniques.

But for me, it’s not just about the treatment itself. What makes us exclusive is the whole experience we offer. Your first aesthetics treatment can be scary – clients might feel nervous or anxious. From the moment I meet them, I want them to feel welcome and relaxed.

Our consultation is so important to understand what the client would like to achieve from the treatment. I’m always honest about what to expect, and I won’t do a treatment if it’s not necessary. I love building that relationship so we can communicate freely and achieve the best possible results together.

Safe practice with the highest standards of care is given at Studio 12. I ensure to explain how to take care of themselves post treatment. I also like to check in later that day, especially with first-time clients, just to give them the extra comfort of knowing they are not alone. I want them to know I’m here if they need me or if there are any issues.

Our client’s journey with us is unique and personal, and I really value that. That’s why, at Studio 12, each treatment is customised just for our clients. We understand there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, and we want to make sure your experience is perfectly tailored to your needs.

Every entrepreneurial journey comes with its share of challenges. Could you share some of the significant struggles you had to face?

I started my business during a tough time when many of us were facing challenges, particularly, due to Covid. While it was a difficult period for most, I saw it as a chance to pursue my passion for aesthetics. Even though I faced financial struggles since I couldn’t work during COVID-19, I took each day as it came and became more determined to start working again.

Balancing work and personal life can be hard. I used to say yes to everything, even working late nights, because I didn’t want to disappoint anyone. However, I realised that I couldn’t do it all. I didn’t want to miss important moments with my kids like their sports events or school activities. I had to make changes before exhausting myself. Now, I’ve scheduled my days to balance work and family time. I still work a couple of late nights, but on days with no plans for the kids, it works well. This way, nobody misses out, and I’m not letting anyone down. If there’s ever an urgent treatment, of course, that takes top priority. Challenges can be a good thing because they often teach us valuable lessons.

What are some of the proudest achievements or milestones that stand out in your career?

It might sound a bit cringy, but what really makes me happy and proud is when clients send me appreciative messages or write positive reviews. It might not be considered a formal achievement, but it genuinely makes me feel proud of the work I do as a practitioner and business owner. Every time I read those messages, it puts a great smile on my face.

I’ve also had the honour of being nominated for several awards. I’ve been a finalist in the Top 10 and Top 5, and I’ve been both a runner-up and a winner on numerous occasions. Additionally, I’ve been asked to be a judge for some awards, which is an unprecedented honour, something that makes me incredibly proud.

The beauty industry is dynamic. How do you stay updated on the latest trends and incorporate them into the services offered at Studio 12?

The beauty and aesthetics industry is indeed dynamic. Thankfully, I’m part of a big group of practitioners, and we speak regularly, train together and constantly bounce ideas and opinions off one another.

Trends come and go, and just because it might be “the latest”, it doesn’t mean it’s always right for my clinic so when a new treatment, product or machine comes out, I do a lot of research to if it sparks my interest and excites me, I would then really consider adding it to my clinic if I think it’s something my clients would benefit from.

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs looking to establish their aesthetics or skincare clinic?

Education is a big priority for me, and I invest a lot of money in courses covering skin, complications, first aid, and new treatments. Staying updated, especially in first aid and complications, is paramount. The more you learn, the more confident you become.
A piece of advice for aspiring entrepreneurs or those advancing in their careers: Just be yourself. There’s a powerful quote I love – “No one is you, and that is your power.” It’s easy to compare yourself to others, especially on social media, and that can be discouraging. But if you work hard and you are committed to doing your best, it will shine through. Don’t worry about what others are doing; focus on yourself. Be patient, nothing happens over night and consistency is key, don’t give up.
